Artist Statement I am a realist painter who grew up in northern Montgomery County, Maryland north of Washington, D.C., on a dirt farm road named after my mom’s parents. The woods and creeks were my playground. I am attracted to landscapes that evoke memories of that time of my life. As I explore the local landscape, I find that contrasts in the natural and man-made world fascinate me. I am drawn to relationships between subjects: a winding road and fall leaves, chopped wood from a fallen tree and flower petals, the architectural lines of a bridge and the landscape around it, new and old, living and inanimate. My work reflects both a love of the countryside and a reaction to the suburbanization of the land I have known for half a century. My grandparents’ farm is now a housing development but adjacent land is park land so I am still able to visit the woods and the creeks. My father’s parents both grew up on farms in nearby Frederick County. I remember trips to family landmarks and other points of interest important to my parents that are now important to me. While I miss my parents and grandparents I also enjoy observing, playing with, and moving on with the younger generations. A nostalgia drives me as I work. Even as the youth of those younger generations teaches me to enjoy life and do what is challenging and often rewarding, I am reminded of a broader time line in which all of our lives unfold and how the land changes around those lives.
